ANALYSE Analyse how suitable Fartlek training is to Messi in order to improve his Cardiovascular Endurance Fartlek training is arguably the training method that most closely resembles the movements of Messi throughout a match. Messi changes his pace throughout a game, from walking around as his team is defending to sprinting onto a through ball, and this can be easily recreated through Fartlek training.
Fartlek training not only incorporates changes of pace but also changes of distance. For example Messi could set up a 100 m run into a 200 m jog before a 15 m sprint a 25 m walk and another 15 m sprint. Once again this shows how Messi can recreate a match play example within his training. To further increase the relevance of the training to his matches Messi can be dribbling with a ball whilst moving for parts of each session. Additionally Fartlek training doesn’t often involve many changes of direction like those you would expect Messi to make in a match. However these could be added in with further planning to the set up of each drill.
JUSTIFY Justify why Messi should spend more time training Agility rather than Cardiovascular Endurance As a striker, Messi doesn’t need to run up and down the whole pitch, as a midfielder would, throughout a game, instead he often makes shorter sprints with variant directions and bursts of speed to run onto a pass. Therefore Agility is arguably more important to his position, as he needs it in order to beat defenders, providing him with goal scoring opportunities.
COMPARE AND CONTRAST Compare and contrast the Cardiovascular Endurance and Agility requirements of Messi to those of Mo Farah Cardiovascular Endurance Agility Both athletes require good cardiovascular Endurance due to their requirement to move for long periods of time. However Mo Farah is likely to maintain the same speed over a set distance whereas Messi will be changing pace throughout the course of the game and using a wider variety of energy systems. While Messi will be changing direction regularly in a match to get past players and track the ball, Mo will barely be changing direction, only occasionally using sidesteps when overtaking other athletes
