Lisa What is the Problem Based on research
Lisa What is the Problem? Based on research, if a person sits for extended periods of time, they are susceptible to potentially harmful health risks. These health risks include: increased risk for cardiovascular disease, increased blood pressure, increased risk for obesity, and a overall risk for premature death. The common person might think that going to the gym once or twice a week would cure this. However that is not the case. People must increase the amount of time they are moving around and standing while decreasing the amount of time in which they spend sitting. How does it work? Our system operated via a Bluetooth configuration. The way our system works is, if a person is not seated on the LISA pad, then an LED will light up on the LISA desk ornament. When a person sits on the LISA pad, the Lily. Pad Arduino in the pad will send a message to Lily. Pad Arduino within the desk ornament and the LED will turn off. After 20 minutes of sitting, an LED will turn on within the ornament. After another 20 minutes, one more will turn on, and so on. After 80 minutes of sitting, all four LEDs will be turned on within the LISA desk ornament. All four LEDs being turned on signifies that the person should take a break and get out of their chair. How to address it? We wanted to address this problem by creating a system that notifies a person when they have been sitting for an extended amount of time. Through analyzing our data and further research, we found that if a person sits for more than half of their waking hours, they are at risk for the negative health factors that come with sitting too long. After sending a survey out and obtaining over 200 responses, the magic number for sitting too long in a day was 8 hours. A visualization of our data can be found below. That being said, we decided to create a button mechanism that is activated when a person is sitting. When they have been sitting too long, our system will notify the person to stand up and move around. Collected Data: In order to analyze the data results from the survey that we sent out, we had to figure out how many hours a person was awake. We had to compare this value to the amount of hours they spent sitting. We had to add a data column to our Microsoft Excel spreadsheet and titled it “At Risk or Not at Risk. ” We applied a formula to these column which was as follows: IF(hours spent sitting > hours awake, “At risk”, “not at risk”). This allowed us to get a clear-cut estimate as to if someone is potentially at risk to the health problems associated with sitting for too long. Materials Used:
