LIPIDS L 3 BIOLOGY
SOME FACTS ABOUT LIPIDS… n Made of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen (like carbohydrates!) n Much lower number of oxygen atoms in lipids than in carbohydrates n Include substances like fats, oils, waxes n EXAMPLE: C 51 H 98 O 6
Properties & Function n Nonpolar, Hydrophobic molecules (water hating!)- why? ? n Functions: – Form Membranes! – Long-term energy storage – Hormones – Water proofing
Molecular structure of one type lipid four parts – n one glycerol n three fatty acids (called a triglyceride)
GLYCEROL (C 3 H 8 O 3)
2 types of FATTY ACIDS
LIPID
How are Lipids made?
Dehydration synthesis to form lipids: n http: //www 2. nl. edu/jste/lipids. htm
Some Lipid molecules have DUAL personalities! One end of Phospolipid mol is Hydrophobic (H 20 hating) and the other is Hydrophilic (H 20 loving). n Guess which end is which?
HOW DO YOU LIKE YOUR LIPIDS? n SATURATED – The fatty acids are completely full of hydrogen atoms n UNSATURATED – There are one or more double bonds, making the fatty acids not full of hydrogens
The Good in moderation… n UNSATURATED FAT = “GOOD FAT” – Usually a liquid; not fully hydrogenated from plants
OK in moderation…. . n SATURATED FATS = “BAD FATS” – Usually solid, fully hydrogenated - animal
The Bad. …. . n Trans fats – Unsaturated, but the double bond between carbons is turned so they are now SOLID at room temperature – Considered “bad” fats
SATURATED, TRANS or UNSATURATED?
Cholesterol- also a Lipid!
What’s wrong with too many Lipids in the Diet?
