Linear Regression Celebrity Age Activity This activity uses real life data to help students practice plotting data points, linear regression, correlation coefficients, and different types of correlation. Students love getting to guess the ages of famous celebrities! The teacher passes out the student handout and shows the pictures one at a time of the 10 celebrities. Students record their guess of the celebrity’s age on their handout. At the end of the slide show, students are shown the birthdays of the celebrities and have to calculate their actual ages. Students then follow the directions on the handout which requires them to plot their data, draw a line of best fit, find the correlation coefficient, identify the type of correlation, and find the line of best fit.
Guess their age!!
Kim Kardashian
Justin Bieber
Beyonce
Taylor Swift
Tom Cruise
Jennifer Lopez
Johnny Depp
Kanye West
Pierce Brosnan
Selena Gomez
Are you done with your guesses? The birthdays are coming up…. .
Birthdays…You need to calculate their age! Kim Kardashian: October 21, 1980 Justin Bieber: March 1, 1994 Beyonce: September 4, 1981 Taylor Swift: December 13, 1989 Tom Cruise: July 3, 1962 Jennifer Lopez: July 24, 1969 Johnny Depp: June 9, 1963 Kanye West: June 8, 1977 Pierce Brosnan: May 16, 1953 Selena Gomez: July 22, 1992
Data Analysis Celebrity Linear Regression Activity Handout Plot your data: Let the x-axis represent actual age and the y axis represent your guess. THEN, DRAW A LINE OF BEST FIT: 1. What is the correlation coefficient of your data? 2. What kind of correlation does your data represent? 1. Strong positive 2. Weak positive 3. Strong negative 4. Weak negative 5. No correlation 3. Find the line of best fit using your calculator (round to the nearest thousandth…. three decimal places):
