Linear Patterns Graphing rules
Lesson Objective To learn how to plot rules on graphs To identify key aspects of a 2 -dimensional graph Lesson Success Criteria • Can plot a set of points onto a graph from a table, or a rule • Can identify key aspects of a graph • x and y axis
The graph plane Features - x-axis (-∞ to ∞) – called the domain - y-axis (-∞ to ∞) – called the range - origin (the point 0, 0) Plotting points - each point on the graph is plotted by its coordinates (x, y) Plot and join ABCD. What shape is formed? A = (4, 3) B = (2, -2) C = (-2, -4) D = (0, 1)
Graphing points from a table Use the rule to complete the table, and then plots it coordinates. y = 2 x + 1 x 0 1 2 3 4 y 1 3 5 7 9 Note: If the rule is from a pattern, or from discrete data, we cannot draw a line, as there is no values in between each x-value
Graphing points from a table 1) y = 2 x + 3 x 0 1 2 3 4 y 2) y = 2 x – 3 x 0 1 2 3 4 y 3) y = 0. 5 x + 4 x 0 1 2 3 4 y 4) y = -2 x + 6 x 0 1 2 3 4 y
Special cases 1) y = 3 x 2) x = 3 y x y
