Abraham Lincoln • Was elected president right before the Civil War broke out. • Because of is courage, strength, and dedication while enduring a nation torn by war, he has earned the reputation as a champion of emancipation. • Wrote the Gettysburg Address in 2 WEEKS!!
• Many southerners were against Lincoln because they thought he would abolish slavery if he became president. • They thought he would come up with new policies that would make them lose the profit off of free labor from slaves and cause the South’s economy to fall.
Robert E. Lee • A Nationalist who disagreed with the secession of the south but was faithful to his state. • He swore to never go against his own state of Virginia. • He respected the views of the north, but was also was faithful to his state and risked his life to defend it. • Lee showed this respect and loyalty in letter entitled “Letter to His Son. ”
• Lincoln actually offered Lee the commanding position of the Union forces, but he declined due to his loyalty.

• This speech is still memorable today because of the effect Lincoln had on the nation. • The speech emphasizes that because of the Civil War, the nation as a whole would be dramatically changed. • The speech started with the birth of the country and ended with the future of the country.

“Letter to His Son” • One thing Lee expresses in this letter is how he does not find a country kept together by swords and bayonets. He goes on to say that this is when war takes over brotherly love. • He told his son how he disagreed with the Civil War and with the secession, but he also showed his devotion to his state in his last line:
• “If the Union is dissolved, and the government disrupted, I shall return to my native state and share the miseries of my people; and, save in defense, will draw my sword on none. ” • This shows how even if the government he believes in is beaten, he will go back to his native state and endure the repercussions that will come to a separated United States of America and never pull his sword to them. • He also says, “But I can anticipate no greater calamity for the country than a dissolution of the union. ”
