Where Do We Start? We generally start with a customer needing something because he or she has an application. Let’s look at a simple example application. Lin. Mot Numbering System 3
Example Application The customer tells us that the required stroke is 220 millimeter (mm). In order choose the right equipment, the first thing we need to know is the stroke length – which is 220 mm. To select a motor, we need to know the Lin. Mot numbering system. Lin. Mot Numbering System 4
The Lin. Mot Numbering Scheme A Typical Motor Number P 01 -37 x 240 F/260 x 460 -C This “Motor” number represents a combination of a stator and a slider, however, the stator and slider each have their own part number and must be ordered separately. Lets take a look in detail. Lin. Mot Numbering System 5
Motor Parts A “Motor” consists of a “Stator” and a “Slider” Lin. Mot Numbering System 6
P 01 -37 x 240 F/260 x 460 -C A B C D A – “P 01” isn’t useful. Forget about it. B – “ 37 x 240 F” This part of the number describes the Stator. C – “ 260 x 460” This part of the number describes the Slider. D – “C” This part of the number describes the connector on the Stator. It is often omitted if the connector is standard. Lin. P 01 -37 x 240 F/260 x 460 -C stator “ 37” technically means that the stator has a 37 mm diameter. It can also be thought of as the “Series” of the Stator. There are three series of stators: n n n 23 series or 23 mm (and also the 23 S) 37 series or 37 mm 48 series (new) or 48 mm “ 240” means that there approximately 240 mm of coils in the stator. n More coils, more force “F” means a fast winding. It is omitted if the winding is standard. Lin. Mot Numbering System 9

That’s It For Stators Any questions about the numbering system? Let’s move on to Sliders. Lin. Mot Numbering System 18
P 01 -37 x 240 F/260 x 460 -C slider “ 260” is the “Shortened Stroke” or Peak Force Stroke or “Sweet Spot”. This means that you can get full force for 260 mm of stroke. “ 460” is the “Max Stroke”. This means that you can get some force for 460 mm of stroke. It’s important to know where the Shortened Stroke and Max Stroke are! Lets look at page 140 in the catalog. Lin. Mot Numbering System 19

Slider PL 01 -20 x 600/520 This is the description of the slider itself. “ 20” is the diameter of the slider in mm. n A 20 mm slider works in a 37 mm stator “ 600” is the length of the slider in mm. n If a customer says “Hey, I’ve got a slider and I don’t know what it is”, he can measure it and we can determine the part # by using this number “ 520” is the approximate length of the magnet stack in mm. Lin. Mot Numbering System 22
Remember Our Example? The required stroke is 220 mm. The motor we just looked at (P 01 -37 x 240/260 x 460) has a shortened stroke of 260 mm. The next smaller motor is a P 01 -37 x 240/160 x 360, so the P 0137 x 240/260 x 460 is the best choice. To start with, pick a motor that has a shortened stroke as long as or longer than the application. Lin. Mot Numbering System 23
But There’s More To It Than That, Isn’t there? Yes, there is. There’s force… and time… and mounting position. We’ll look at that in detail during the course on the Lin. Mot Designer sizing software Lin. Mot Numbering System 24
That’s It!! Any other questions? The End (of this one, anyway) Lin. Mot Numbering System 25
