Light Vocabulary 6 th Grade Science
Optics l. The study of visible light and the ways in which visible light interacts with the eye to produce vision.
Visible Light l The wave energy we can see l Made of many colors l Light waves travel in straight lines
Radiant Energy l Energy given off by the sun l Travels in waves l Another name for light energy
Convex vs. Concave l. Convex: A mirror curved outward, like the bottom of a spoon. l Concave: A mirror curved inward towards the center, like the inside of a spoon.
Absorb l When light waves enter a substance and change into other forms of energy. l Darker colors absorb more light
Reflect l When else light waves bounce off something
Refract l When light waves bend l Light waves are refracted as they pass through water.
Opaque l An object that does not allow light waves to pass through it l You cannot see through these objects
Translucent l An object that allows a few light waves to pass through it l You can almost see through these objects.
Transparent l An object that allows light waves to pass through l You can see through these objects
Electromagnetic Spectrum or EM Spectrum
Spectrum l White light is made of all the colors of the rainbow.
ROY G BIV l The colors of the rainbow l Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet l Red has the longest wavelengths (bent the least) l Violet has the shortest wavelengths (bent the most)
