DEFINITION Light is energy that travels in waves. You can see it.
CHARACTERISTICS • Travels in a straight narrow beam (ray) • Reflects or bounces off of things (light) • Different lengths of light make different colors (rainbow/refraction)
SHADOWS • Objects block light rays • Change size by angle “When the sun appears high in the sky the shadow is longer early or late in the day , when the sun appears lower in the sky. ” When the moon covers the sun it casts a shadow on Earth and it is called a solar eclipse.
THE HUMAN EYE • Iris can control amount of light that comes to the human eye • Pupil gets larger in dim light (dark) and smaller in bright light • Human eye sees things upside down but the brain is smart enough and turns it the right way
REFLECTION • Bounces off things “light rays reflect differently off smooth and rough surfaces. ”
REFRACTION • Light changes direction when goes through glass • Pencil placed in glass of water looks broken • Objects underwater look bigger than they are Click play to watch video below
TRANSPARENT • Clear or see through • Eyeball has a transparent cover
TRANSLUCENT • Scatters light (blurry)
OPAQUE • Absorbs light • Can’t see through it
