Light and heat (different types of light bulbs)
Outline • What is the relationship between light and heat? • How exactly does light transform into heat? • Light Basics. • How Light Bulbs Work? • Types of light bulbs – Gas discharge bulb. – Incandescent light bulb. – Solid-state lighting.
What is the relationship between light and heat? Heat is a method for the transfer of energy, and light also is a method for the transfer of energy. Heat is NOT light. All electromagnetic radiation is light, Also Heat is infrared electromagnetic radiation. but heat is not electromagnetic radiation; it is heat.
How exactly does light transform into heat? • When light warms up a material wall, the electrons in the atoms in the material absorb the light, then turn into thermal energy. • Light excites electrons. • The atoms of the material are perpetually vibrating. Some of those atoms vibrate sufficiently vigorously that their vibrational energy is roughly equal to the electronic energy (photons). • Those atoms then make a quantum transition from 'electronically excited' to 'vibrationally excited, ' meaning that the energy causes the whole atom to move. We feel that motion as "heat. “ • The atoms which make the jump to vibrational excitation soon collide into neighboring atoms, dissipating their vibrational energy throughout the entire material, making the material hot throughout.
Light Basics Light is a form of energy that can be released by an atom. It is made up of many small particle-like packets that have energy and momentum but no mass. These particles, called light photons, are the most basic units of light.
Light Bulbs
Englishman Sir Joseph Swan and American Thomas Edison both got it right around the same time (in 1878 and 1879, respectively), and within 25 years, millions of people around the world had installed electrical lighting in their homes.
