3. 1. 1 Define stress and list the symptoms of stress Definition of stress: Stress is a state of emotional or mental strain or tension that is caused by unfavourable or very demanding situations or problems. These could, for example be related to your studies, work, family, relationships or money.

3. 1. 1 Define stress and list the symptoms of stress The symptoms of stress: 1. Physical signs and symptoms: Allergies, skin rashes, chest pain, feeling dizzy, sleep too mush or too little. 2. Emotional signs and symptoms: Depression, feeling lonely, hopeless and worthless, find it difficult to focus. 3. Behavioural signs and symptoms: Think about committing suicide, often cry for no reason, Get into fights easily. Refer to your textbook for more examples (Page 89).

Personality types: some people worry a lot and are often tense Social pressures: debt , poverty, abuse, crime Environmental pressures: housing, sewerage, land Health: getting sick and having poor health may cause stress Causes of stress in the workplace: 1. Job change: job loss, retrenchment, downsizing 2. Difficult colleagues: competition, jealousy, conflict 3. Unproductive staff: absenteeism, managing lazy or poorly trained staff 4. 3. 1. 4 Explain the effects of stress on personal and work situations Unmanaged stress has a serious effect on both personal and work situations. Your health will suffer and your relationship could fall apart. You may suffer from emotional exhaustion or burnout, or have a nervous breakdown Work stress leads to mental and emotional health problems. Because a great deal of your life is spent at work, work stress can lead to stress in other parts of your life
