The Biography of Piscine Molitor Patel • Piscine had gotten his name from a family friend, whom Piscine called Mamaji. • Piscine is the French word for a swimming pool, and Molitor is the name of a swimming pool in Paris.
The Biography of Piscine Molitor Patel • Piscine is better known as Pi. • He came up with this nickname after having been called “Pissing” by his classmates in middle school. • He would stand up and introduce himself as Pi, like the math symbol.

The Biography of Piscine Molitor Patel • Pi’s father wanted to leave Pondicherry, India and go to Canada. • He wanted to start a new life. • Pi wasn’t to happy about it though. • They sold the zoo and left for Canada.
The Biography of Piscine Molitor Patel • When Pi was traveling to Canada, the ship that he was on sank when they were halfway to the Midway Toll. • Only Pi and a few animals had survived this tragedy. • They were forced to be packed on a 26 -ft, orange life boat.
The Biography of Piscine Molitor Patel • To survive the hyena killed the zebra and the orangutan. And then the tiger (also known as Richard Parker) killed the hyena • Pi arranged an easy living arrangement, Pi would catch the fish and Richard Parker would help eat them.

He survived by using cleverness, prayer, and willpower. • Pi ended up meeting another castaway in the gigantic ocean who had tried to eat him. • But he couldn’t because Richard Parker ended up killing the stranger first.
The Biography of Piscine Molitor Patel • Pi then landed on a strange island that was made entirely of algae. • Pi and Richard Parker were very malnourished by this time and Pi basically had gone mad. • Pi and Richard Parker Landed in Mexico, as they got off the boat Richard Parker ran into the jungle, never to be seen again.
The Biography of Piscine Molitor Patel • When he arrived in Mexico two civil servants interviewed him to get some information on what had happened to him. • They didn’t get any answers but they did get his story.
The Biography of Piscine Molitor Patel • When they questioned him he told them a “better story”. • He told them a version where instead of it being animals with human characteristics, he told them his story with humans having animal characteristics.
The Biography of Piscine Molitor Patel • Pi left the investigators with a question, “What story do you prefer? ” • Of course they preferred the animal story because they just couldn’t wrap their minds around humans eating other humans.
The Biography of Piscine Molitor Patel • With that Pi goes on living the rest of his life with a horrible yet exciting story to tell to his children and for them to tell to their children. • Pi now lives in Canada, with his wife and children. • Piscine will always be remembered.
