Private time John 13 review o John ends the public ministry of Jesus in ch 12 o Chapters 13 -14 -15 -16 -17 are activities and conversation with the chosen twelve o John 13 begins this private time as Jesus is at supper with the twelve o He reveals some very troubling news in ch 13

Troubling news review o Supper is finished o Devil has entered Judas’ heart to betray Jesus o Judas has left the upper room o Jesus tells the eleven He is going away n And they cannot come o Jesus tells Peter he will deny Him three times this very night n They all will flee from Him

What one word would you use as the main though in this chapter? UNITY

John 17 overview o Jesus’ prayer concerning himself (vs 1 -5) n That the crowning act of His earthly ministry may indeed lead to the glorious conclusion which God has intended o His prayer for his immediate apostles (vs 6 -19) n That they may be protected and upheld in their mission, which is the continuation of His own

John 17 overview o His prayer for all disciples, present and future (vs 20 -26) n That they may be unified as He and His Father are united in spiritual oneness o Jesus has finished His final words to His apostles before His crucifixion n What better way to close than with prayer!!

Jesus prays for Himself John 17: 1 -5 Notice Jesus speaking in third person in vs 1 -3 o “the hour has come” o Glorify—to make glorious, or cause so to appear n Glory—very great praise, honor, or distinction o Jesus would be glorified and in so doing would glorify the Father n He will do this by completing the great plan of the Father from before the foundations of the world, the plan to save mankind; the Father will glorify Him by the resurrection

Jesus prays for Himself o Jesus came to give eternal life to as many as would come to Him in obedience o In accepting this life they We eternal glorify God by would know the Father as the one true doing the. God workand He Jesus as His Son has given us to do. o He has completed His mission on the earth and in so doing has the here Father (v 4) “The attitude of glorified the Pharisees shows the n He speaks knowing deathofwill folly of supposing that. His evidence anyhappen kind canin a few hours persuade men whose purpose is to disbelieve. ”

Jesus prays for Himself o Jesus asks the Father to restore Him to the glory He had with Him before [coming to the earth] o Three implications (v 5) n Jesus existed before coming into the world n He had divine glory in that existence n He expected to return to heaven and that glory again

Jesus prays for His apostles John 17: 6 -19 o Jesus had made know the Father to the apostles (John 14: 7 -11) o The Father gave them to Jesus taught them the words that came from His Father (v 7 -8) o They believed Jesus had come from the Father (v 8; 16: 28 -30)

Jesus prays for His apostles o Jesus was praying specifically for these men (v 9) o They belonged to Him, and all that is His is the Father’s and vice versa (v 10) n This is possible only because both are deity o Jesus was leaving this world (v 11) n The apostles would still be in the world n Thus, His special prayer for them John 10: 30 "I and My Father are one. "

Jesus prays for His apostles o Jesus prays “Holy Father, keep them” (v 11) n Jesus had been with them n He was leaving n He prayed to the Father to protect them o Jesus prays for unity among the apostles n He uses His relationship with the Father as a pattern (v 11) o One had been lost (Judas) by his own choice (v 12)

Jesus prays for His apostles o Jesus says again He is leaving them (v 13) o He asks God to care for them n Give them joy n The world will hate them n They will be left in the world without Him being with them n Give them strength to overcome the evil one

Jesus prays for His apostles o Jesus prays for their sanctification (v 17) n Set them apart for special service to God n Set them apart to teach the word n Set them apart by the word n The word is truth o John 8: 32 “And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. ” n Free from sin

Jesus prays for future disciples John 17: 20 -26 o Jesus indirectly refers to the commission He would later give His apostles n There would be others who would believe on Him because of their word o As He prayed for unity within the apostles, He immediately does the same for future believers n Unity comparable to “Us” (v 21) n Unity that would cause the world to believe

Jesus prays for future disciples o Jesus was crowned with glory because of the things He suffered (Hebrews 2: 9 -10) n He has shared that glory with the apostles n It was for the purpose of unity n It was to show the world that Jesus came from the Father n It was shown by the Father’s love for them

Jesus prays for future disciples o Jesus prayed that all who believe in Him may be with Him in heaven (v 24) n There we will see Him in the glory He had before the foundations of the world (2 Thessalonians 2: 13 -14) o The world did not know the Father (v 25) n n Jesus knew the Father He showed the Father to the apostles The apostles will declare the Father to the world Jesus prays that the love of the Father would be in them

Ending… o With this the discourse ends o He has tried to comfort them over— n Judas’ betrayal n His leaving n Peter’s denials (and all of them fleeing) o His final words of encouragement before His death o His final words before He is changed after His resurrection o A prayer for them and for us
