Night, with ebon pinion, brooded o’er the vale; All around was silent, save the night wind’s wail, When Christ, the Man of Sorrows, In tears, and sweat, and (as) blood, Prostrate in the garden, raised His voice to God.
Smitten for offenses which were not His own, He, for our transgressions, had to weep alone; No friend with words to comfort, Nor hand to help was there, When the Meek and Lowly humbly bowed in prayer.
Abba, Father, if indeed it may, Let this cup of anguish pass from Me, I pray; Yet, if it must be suffered, by Me, Thine only Son, Abba, Father, let Thy will be done.
’Tis midnight, and on Olive’s brow The star is dimmed that lately shone; ’Tis midnight in the garden now, The suff’ring Savior prays alone.
’Tis midnight, and on Olive’s brow The star is dimmed that lately shone; ’Tis midnight in the garden, now The suff’ring Savior prays alone.
’Tis midnight, and from all removed, The Savior wrestles lone with fears— E’en that disciple whom He loved Heeds not his Master’s grief and tears.
’Tis midnight, and for other’s guilt The Man of Sorrows weeps in blood; Yet He that hath in anguish knelt Is not forsaken by His God.
