Pilate o Pontius Pilate has been enshrined forever in the cowards’ Hall of Shame. Though he knew the charges against Jesus Christ were void of substance, because of his spineless politicism, he delivered the Son of God over to the rebellious Jews for crucifixion.
Pilate o But both Philo and Josephus paint a very stark portrait of the Roman ruler. Pilate is characterized as oppressive, greedy, stubborn, and cruel.
Pilate o Philo specifically catalogs “his venality, his violence, his thefts, his assaults, his abusive behavior, his frequent executions of untried prisoners, and his endless savage ferocity” (Gaium 302), though some claim Philo exaggerated the matter. Nonetheless, Pilate did antagonize the Jews and they hated him.
Trial before Pilate o The Jews take Jesus to the praetorium o Praetorium refers to the palace of Pontius Pilate, the Roman procurator of Judea. According to the New Testament, this is where Jesus Christ was tried and condemned to death. Roman scourging o Flogging was a legality preliminary to every Roman execution, and only women and Roman senators or soldiers (except in eases of desertion) were exempt. The usual instrument was a short whip (flagellum) with several single or braided leather thongs of variable lengths, in which small iron balls or sharp pieces of sheep bones were tied at intervals.
Roman scourging o Occasionally, staves also were used. For scourging, the man was stripped of his clothing, and his hands were tied to an upright post. The back, buttocks, and legs were flogged either by two soldiers (lictors) or by one who alternated positions.
Roman scourging o The severity of the scourging depended on the disposition of the lictors and was intended to weaken the victim to a state just short of collapse or death. After the scourging, the soldiers often taunted their victim.
Roman soldiers mocking o After the scourging…remember Jesus was very near death at this point o The soldiers put a robe on Him and a crown made from thorns o The bow before Him mocking Him, spit on Him, and slap Him
