Life Functions & Survival Needs Chapter 1: Human Biology

Maintain Boundaries Cells Surrounded by membrane that allows necessary materials in restricts damaging and unnecessary substances

Integumentary System Skin protects: Organs from drying out Bacteria from entering body From heat, sunlight and chemicals in environment

Movement Muscular Pump system blood Move food through body Move skeleton Remove waste

Responsiveness Sense changes (stimuli) in environment then react to them Nerves and Reflexes

Digestion Break down food Molecules absorbed into blood and transported to cells

Metabolism Cellular respiration Convert oxygen and nutrients into ATP(energy)

Excretion Remove wastes from body Digestive system produces feces Urinary system disposes of urine Skin produces sweat

Reproduction Reproductive Produce Cell system: offspring reproduction Mitosis: dividing one cell into two

Growth Increase in size Increase cells in number of

Homeostasis Body’s ability to maintain constant internal environment What are some examples of homeostasis in our body?

How we maintain homeostasis…

Negative Feedback Response by shutting off the original stimulus Examples: Increase in body temperature Blood pressure Breathing rate Heart rate Blood sugar

Positive Feedback that increases the stimulus Examples: Birth Blood clotting
