WHAT IS CSR? • Responsibility to students – and their careers • Stewardship of students during their time enrolled • Accountable to the ‘public’ purse (about 15% of financial spend is from the UK government) • Responsible running of the Institution • Openness and transparency in decision-making • Being open to questions from governors • Democratic election of governors • Relationships with Funding Council, agencies, wider community • Staff consultation and engagement Adrian Hall, School Secretary, LSE

UTC 08 -09 • 56 Participants (25 CR Index, 31 Environment) • Observations - Impact Areas: • Some starting to capture GHG Scope 3 in their carbon measures - report on their bigger carbon footprint (inc. waste, travel for work, staff/student commuting, leased property, etc) • Environment third impact area: Order of popularity (1) travel (2) building & design (3) biodiversity • Teaching, Learning & Research: 22/26 (seven as one of their three ‘scored’ impact areas)

How was it for me… • Honest - proud but modest • Enlightening - so much more than ‘universities’ • Culture - strategic plan, language, approach to survey, visits, ‘old’ or ‘new’ • Improvementality - always striving to do better • Themes/branding - employability, enterprise, knowledge, research, international, etc • Outreach and WP – have to do it BUT all do it very well! • Balanced score card – good for demonstrating links between core values, HEI objectives, staff, and KPIs
How was it for me… Carbon reduction culture in ‘Estates’: Footprinting Common KPI (energy emissions, waste, travel) Research and technology Expertise in management (ecocampus, CT) • Sustainable Development is ‘officially’ a priority: Strategic plans Curriculum review Creative ways to improve academic spread Cross-cutting theme Linking to wellbeing
