Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 Virtual Server will be available to customers in two editions: – Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 Enterprise – Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 Standard Features are the same, scalability is the only difference. Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 Standard supports four processors and Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 Enterprise supports up to 32 physical processors.

Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 • Allows multiple operating systems to run simultaneously on the same processor • Each independent virtual machine functions as a self-contained computer • Run side-by-side testing and production systems on the same machine – Use off-the-shelf servers – Use fewer servers with higher utilisation

Microsoft Virtual PC • Similar to VS 2005 VPC client-based virtual machine products make it possible to run multiple operating systems simultaneously on one workstation. • Virtual machine products are often used to run applications that are only compatible with a specific version of an operating system – (e. g. an accounting system that only runs on Microsoft® Windows® 98), and to test applications on different versions of an operating system.

Windows Desktop Licensing and Virtual Machine Products • Except under volume licensing each copy of a Microsoft Windows Desktop Operating System that is running on a single physical computer, including a computer using virtual machine software, must be separately licensed. • Upgrade license acquired through volume licensing grants rights for the customer to install up to two instances of Windows Professional on one desktop. – The two instances may be two different versions of Windows Professional (e. g. Windows XP Professional and Windows 2000 Professional)

Under volume licensing how many instances of Windows can I install in a virtual machine? • You are only granted one additional instance. • The host Windows operating system which is installed on your computer counts as the first instance of Windows.

Can I use my two instances on two separate physical computers? • No. You are granted rights to install up to two instances of Windows Professional on a single desktop for each Volume Licensing upgrade acquired. • • You may not use these rights to install Windows on two separate physical computers.

Do I need a device CAL for each instance of Windows accessing a Windows Server? • No. One device CAL is all that is needed for multiple operating system instances on a single physical machine. • In the case of a User CAL each person accessing the server through any client device must have a CAL.

Can I install multiple copies of Office or other applications for each operating system instances installed? • Yes. For each Microsoft Office or desktop applications license that was acquired through Volume Licensing customers have the right to install up to two instances of Office on one device for each license as long as the two installations of the desktop application are not accessed or used on more than one device. • The second installation of Office or desktop application must be an older version of Office than the version licensed (e. g. , license for Office 2003 Professional, and 2 nd copy has to be Office XP Professional, Office 2000 Professional or an earlier version).
