Introduction Our organization will visit the schools and homes in Kent County to educate the school nurses, teachers, families/caregivers, and students on ways to prevent lice transmission. We will provide information on the treatment options for lice to reduce the number of school absences. We will empower families to efficiently and effectively treat lice to decrease the negative stereotypes associated with lice outbreaks.
Why do we need Lice Lessons? What is the need for this service? An estimated 6 -12 million infestations occur each year in the United States (CDC, 2015) 1/3 of school children under 16 have experienced on average 3. 6 head lice infestations over the last year. This rises to 48% for children of primary school age (4 -11) (Lukats Communications, 2011) 1. 78 million children are absent 2. 7 million days a year from school as parents choose to keep them at home (Lukats Communications, 2011) The economic impact of head lice in the U. S. is estimated to approach $1 billion dollars annually. This includes both direct costs (products and treatments used to kill lice and their eggs) and indirect costs (missed work and school days, misdiagnosis, and misuse of pediculicides and other agents) (MDCH, 2013) Parents are taking 2. 78 million days off work to tackle head lice treatments (Lukats Communications, 2011)
Why do we need Lice Lessons? Why do we need Lice Lessons in Kent County? There is a "medium" incidence of lice outbreaks in Kent County (Nix, 2016) Inappropriate treatments can pose real and significant health hazards to the child and his or her household (CDC, 2015) It is unlikely that all head life infestations can be prevented, but education on the signs and symptoms to detect lice and treat early infestations, as well as knowing the treatment options is important to prevent the spread of lice to others (Devore & Schutze, 2015)
Lice Facts Pediculosis is an infestation of head lice, NOT an infection. Lice primarily affects children between the ages of 3 -12 years. Transmission occurs by direct head-to-head contact Indirect spread through touching personal belongings (combs, brushes, hats) of an infected person is less likely to occur (Devore & Schutze, 2015) Common Symptoms: (CDC, 2015) » Itching » Sores on the head » Tickling sensation » Sleeplessness and irritability
