My Goal today. . . Is to get everyone who feels this way about library research: To feel like this:
Agenda Today we will. . . 1. Explore UW Libraries’ online resources & services. 2. Develop a research strategy. 3. Start finding sources using UW Libraries Search. 4
UW Libraries’ Homepage www. lib. washington. edu/ 5
Developing a Research Strategy 7
What’s a Research ● SO MANY RESOURCE TYPES: e. Books, Strategy & Why Video/Audio, Articles, Dissertations, Newspapers, do. Maps, we need Music, Photos, AND MORE! ● SO MUCH “STUFF”: 8. 15 million print volumes, 1. 35 million one? ebooks, 7 million articles ● SO MANY PLACES TO SEARCH: 620 databases amounts of resources need for some sort of a plan
Remember my goal. . . Yikes! That’s A LOT of stuff to look through. . . But don’t worry, that’s why we have a Research Strategy!!
Steps in a Research Strategy* 1. Developing a Research Topic / Question x 2. Knowing what type of resources you need x 3. Creating keywords to search with x 4. Knowing where to search 5. Creating powerful search statements that find precisely what you need - useful, relevant resources *Not a strictly Linear Process
Example Research Question Original Research Question: How has the language used by Southern teenagers on social media impacted their sense of identity? REVISED Research Question: How has the language on social media impacted teenagers’ body image? Current Research Strategy: I’ll search for scholarly peerreviewed articles that have been published in the last decade. But where will I search?
Where to Search: UW Libraries Search ● UW Libraries Search is like “the Google” of UW Libraries ● Searches EVERYTHING in the UW library system, including all of the online resources we subscribe to! ● Why is it better than Google ? We pay for subscriptions to lots of things that Google can’t access!!
How to get to UW Libraries Search ● https: //www. lib. washington. edu ● This searches EVERYTHING in the UW library system, including all of the online databases to which the library subscribes!
Search Statements Databases are simple creatures. ● Search Statements are when you link keywords together using operators ● You must use keywords. . . typing in your entire question will not produce results! ● Unlike Google, UW Libraries Search will not autocorrect spelling or make suggestions
Quick recap of keywords Example: Key Concept teenagers Synonyms adolescents Broader Terms youth Narrower Terms Gen Z Related Terms MIllennials, high school, emo music
Operators: AND, OR, (), “” Search Statement Example: (teenagers OR adolescents) AND “social media” ● Use OR between synonyms to broaden your search. ● Use AND to narrow your search to the overlap of two terms ● Use “” to keep multiterm keywords together ● Use () to clarify which operators go with which keywords 16
Operators: * Search Statement Example: (teenagers OR adolescents) AND “social *” ● Use * when you want to include variations of your “base” keyword ○ The Example would return results about “social media, ” “social networking, ” social workers, ” etc. ● Also in general… plural nouns are the best keywords ● Search Tips Handout 17
Finding Sources 18
Example Search Statement ● Recall my Research Question: How has the language on social media impacted teenagers’ body image? ● Recall some of my keywords. . . ● Add operators to translate my Research Question into… ● Search Statement: language AND “social media” AND (teenagers OR adolescents)AND “body image” Keep in mind that I’m looking for academic peer-reviewed articles published in the last 10 years. . .
