LIBRARY INSTRUCTION ( BIBLIOGRAPHIC INSTRUCTION, DOCUMENTARY INSTRUCTION, INFORMATION LITERACY) TYPES OF INSTRUCTION: LIBRARY USE INTERNET SEARCHING AND EVALUATION INFORMATION LITERACY
METHODS FOR INSTRUCTION • CLASS INSTRUCTION – Usually descriptive (lecture) with some prescriptive activities (projects) • EMBEDDED CLASSROOM PROJECT – (best for learning—learners get to use what they have been told; but may lack universality) • INDIVIDUAL INSTRUCTION ALONE – Individualized instruction is usually better than group • INDIVIDUAL INSTRUCTION AS SUPPLEMENT – E. g. , instruction during reference interview • ONLINE INSTRUCTION – More common, using tutorials, screencapture, audio, visual, and other tools. May also use videos of live classes.
MEANS FOR INSTRUCTION • LECTURE/DESCRIPTIVE – Good for delivering information that is universal or general; easily forgotten, though • PRESCRIPTIVE – Tell the person what to do and then have them do it; best for specific or particular tasks • AS PART OF A PROJECT – Best learned; often part of a class project • AUDIO/VIDEO PRESENTATIONAL – May be used alone or with text; high entertainment value, sometimes low learning value because it ‘goes by’ the viewer. • MODELED – Show what to do and then have them do it (may be done live or with audio or video captures as models) • TUTORIALS – Individual, often self-guided instruction – WEBCONFERENCING
LIBRARY USE • USE OF THE CATALOG (SEARCHING, ORGANIZATION OF KNOWLEDGE [CLASSIFICATION]), • RESOURCES (DATABASES, MONOGRAPHS, COLLECTIONS, VARIOUS LIBRARIES WITHIN A SYSTEM AND THEIR LOCATIONS AND SPECIAL COLLECTIONS, JOURNAL, PAPER, AND DIGITAL HOLDINGS, VIDEO AND AUDIO HOLDINGS) • SERVICES (I. L. L, REFERENCE, SUBJECT SPECIALISTS, DISABILITY SERVICES) • CONTROLLED VOCABULARY VERSUS KEYWORD – TYPES OF CONTROLLED VOCABULARY (LCSH, MESH, KINSEY, DATABASE THESAURI)
INTERNET SEARCHING AND EVALUATION • DIFFERENT SEARCH ENGINES/PORTAL SITES AND THE SEARCH ENGINE MODES OF FUNCTIONING (‘ALGORITHMS’) (I. E. . , GOOGLE VERSUS YAHOO!) • IMAGE SEARCHING • PRIVACY CONCERNS (RECURSIVE SEARCH MEMORIES, USER MONITORING, RESELLING OF DATA, ADVERTISING) AND TOOLS FOR BLOCKING THESE. • SOCIAL MEDIA (PRIVACY CONCERNS) • CREATING INFORMATION (PRIVACY CONCERNS, COPYRIGHT, PLAGIARISM, UNIVERSITY IT POLICIES) • CROWDSOURCED KNOWLEDGE (WIKIPEDIA)
INFORMATION LITERACY Determine the extent of information needed Access the needed information effectively and efficiently Evaluate information and its sources critically Incorporate selected information into one’s knowledge base Use information effectively to accomplish a specific purpose Understand the economic, legal, and social issues surrounding the use of information, and access and use information ethically and legally Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education http: //www. ala. org/acrl/standards/informationliteracycompetency#ildef • • • Mike Eisenberg: What is Information Literacy? http: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=l 9 UXEDNP 1 lc
LEARNING OBJECTIVES/OUTCOMES • INCREASINGLY, UNIVERSITIES ARE HAVING TO INCLUDE LEARNING OBJECTIVES AND OUTCOMES, ALONG WITH OUTCOME ASSESSEMENTS IN THEIR SYLLABI AND COURSES. • LEARNING OBJECTIVES STATE THE GOALS FOR STUDENT LEARNING; • LEARNING ASSESSEMENT MEASURE IS THESE HAVE BEEN FULFILLED THROUGH: – PRE-/POST MEASUREMENT TESTS, PORTFOLIOS, EXIT INTERVIEWS, SURVEYS, GRADES, SELF-ASSESSMENT, ETC.
