Hieroglyphs were the formal writing system used in Ancient Egypt. Hieroglyphs are written in rows or columns and can be read from left to right or from right to left. You can tell the direction in which the text is to be read because the human or animal figures always face towards the beginning of the line. Also the upper symbols are read before the lower. The pyramids were built to protect the body of the deceased pharaoh. These massive tombs were constructed to withstand the elements of time and were intended to last forever. Most Ancient Egyptians planned for their death and the pharaoh was no exception. The most famous pyramids are found in Giza which are some of the largest structures ever built. Most pharaohs were men but some well-known pharaohs, such as Nefertiti and Cleopatra, were women. A Pharaoh was the most important and powerful person in the kingdom.
