Extreme Radiation Environment • LHCb VELO will be HOT! Middle station • Maximum Fluence • NIEL 1 Me. V neq/cm 2/year • Strongly non-uniform • dependence on 1/r 2 and station (z) VESPA needs ~ 1016 neq/cm 2 charged particle tolerance Far station VELO 1. 4 x 1014 neq/cm 2/year VESPA factor 10 higher 2
LHCb Upgrade and FP 7 bid • Testbeam Facilities: – Radiation requirement of silicon sensors for LHCb strongly overlap with those of GPDs – Strips & pixels both considered – 3 D and n-on-p technologies both considered – All require extensive test-beam studies – LHCb readout chip (Beetle) is analogue, so ideal for sensor studies • We are also using for ATLAS SLHC detector CCE tests – Interest in building silicon telescope for SLHC
LHCb Upgrade and FP 7 bid • Irradiation Facilities: – Currently primarily use • CERN – pions • Ljubljana – neutrons for VELO – Will make use of new facillities
LHCb Upgrade and FP 7 bid • Electronics – Fully synchronous readout at 40 MHz from ondetector front-ends to the DAQ interface in the counting room. DAQ interface MUX Data formatting Front-end Zero suppression Trigger – Radiation hard FE chip design – Data shipping off F/E chip at 40 MHz – GBT chip – LHCb upgrade push for the highest possible link speed
LHCb Upgrade and FP 7 bid • Software Developments: – Use GEANT 4 for main simulation – ATLAS software framework (ATHENA) based on LHCb (GAUDI), so good basis for common developments – Processing algorithms in FPGA firmware (pedestal, common mode, cross-talk filter, clustering) useful for testbeams – Track reconstruction & alignment package experience for test beam

Metrology and Alignment Stability – pressure and mechanical variations Sensor and system metrology Alignment / metrology infrastructure common to detector developments - Would be interested in developing facility to survey at operational temperature
