LHCb computing in Russia Ivan Korolko (ITEP Moscow) Russia-CERN JWGC, March 2006
Current status (1) Russian distributed Tier-2 cluster permanently participates in LHCb activities (~35% of CPU in Russia) Computing centers: IHEP (Protvino), INR (Troitsk), ITEP (Moscow), PNPI (St. Petersburg), MSU (Moscow), JINR (Dubna) Massive MC production (Data Challenges) – became a routine task, going on with a minimal intervention from site managers (via LCG resources or in pure DIRAC mode)
Current status (2) Computing resources in Russia • CPU ~400 k. SI 2 k • Storage ~40 TB • Networking ? ? ? very moderate often limiting We hope to improve the situation considerably in 2006
LHCb DC 06 Aim: Certify LHCb computing model Provide data for physics performance studies Challenge: Distribution of RAW data from CERN to Tier-1’s Reconstruction and stripping at Tier 1’s DST distribution to CERN and other Tier-1’s use Grid for analysis Pre-production before DC 06 (100 M events) ~4 MSI 2 k. months (over 2 months): CERN+Tier-1+ Tier 2’s ~125 TB of storage: CERN
Distributed analysis During next 2 years Grid analysis has to become a routine task. . . GANGA – LHCb interface to the Grid 2005 - 1 month visit to CERN for GANGA testing (V. Romanovsky) 2006 – continue this work (3 -4 months) install and test GANGA in Russia
Participation in core LHCb software Russia will contribute 2 FTEs in 2007 (+1 FTE next years ? ) • data management tools • distributed databases (calibration, alignment) • distributed analysis Final details are still under discussion
reminder All LHCb participants from Russia plan extensive physics analysis in their home institutes. We have to learn how to: • Run LHCb detectors • Run analysis jobs from Russia • Get some data sample to Russia • Ensure access to this data for the whole Collaboration And we have to provide CPU resources for MC production
