LHCb commissioning in 2021 Machine checkout Cavern closed
LHCb commissioning in 2021 Machine checkout Cavern closed, access limited LS 2 extended by 2 months (? ) March April May Complete commissioning of “last” detectors EM(s)? Recommissioning w/ beams Intensity ramp-up June July August Physics data taking w/ full machine* September October November Pb+Pb+ ** First 3 x 3 physics fill in Stable Beams Inject SMOG “Quiet beams” data taking Low μ, global commissioning! Changing μ Tune detector + trigger *LHCb to collect ~ 1 fb-1 in 2021 in pp (2 months at 4 x 1032 @ 50% efficiency) **if momentum slip stacking* is done in Pb. Pb, then bunch separation is 50 ns we will have to fight hard to get collisions from the others… Commissioning news, 21/01/2020 F. 2021: the crystal ball prediction Extend LS 2 by 2 extra months this is now the baseline, we shall adapt to it • We can really use it to regain time lost for commissioning • Perform as much as possible in “local-to-global mode” ü Not sure how much access we can have during magnet training Followed by recommissioning with beam - Starts in first half of May (exact date 10 th of May) • 8 -10 weeks estimated only 8 included in schedule (aggressive IMHO) ü Already requested to be able to inject SMOG with circulating beams (it’s ok) Commissioning news, 21/01/2020 F. Alessio, CERN 2
2021: the crystal ball prediction First stable beams expected July 8 th • Only few bunches (2 x 2 or 3 x 3) ü Stable beams fills expected ~ every nights in the summer ü Including intensity ramp-up up to ~1200 bunches ü Estimated 1 month at least • Some scrubbing will be done (the amount is highly uncertain) • Physics is defined as started when reaching 1200 bunches in the machine ü More intensity ramp-up, more beam commissioning still ü MD + TS block mid-September Commissioning news, 21/01/2020 F. Alessio, CERN 3
2021: the crystal ball prediction Full machine with pp expected end of August • 5 to 6 weeks of physics with full machine ü No mention of the proton-per-bunch increase to be expected ü Indicated a total of 65 days of physics starting from 1200 bunches Then leave way to Pb. Pb run • In the current plan, injector “slip stacking” is the baseline ü Should allow to inject Pb. Pb with 50 ns separation: major increase in lumi! o This make ALICE/LHCb exclusive: can’t have both taking ~1000 colliding Stop December 6 th Commissioning news, 21/01/2020 F. Alessio, CERN 4
