LHC plans • • Tues evening: power tests Wed: injector tests up to the transfer lines Fri: repeat “handshake” test Sat: Ready to inject beam in the machine (this was originally scheduled for Monday) – Inject one bunch of 5 E+9 protons to a (closed) collimator, splash it, then move on. . . – CSC should be in HV=STANDBY for splashes • Expect ~3 weeks of commissioning before stable beams… – LHC will be circulating with single (pilot) bunch for “some time” (start with flat machine with ALICE+LHCb off, CMS+ATLAS on…) – We will need to be ready for collisions on a very short timescale… 15 Feb 2011 G. CMS activities • Currently in “continuous running” with cosmic rays – Dealing with the cooling in tracker and pixels has taken them longer than they had expected • The hope had been to run with tracker + pixels for several days to study alignment with cosmic rays… – Tracker was in last night… They are almost there… • Many subdetectors are struggling to understand their L 1 A timing… – Recall, there was a recabling between the TTCci and TTCex modules which was expected to reduce the L 1 A latency by 1 bx • CSC confirmed the 1 bx shift in L 1 A timing in January… • … it has been corrected in the Local Trigger Control module for local running • … it has been corrected in the Global Trigger for global running 15 Feb 2011 G. AFEB timing from Local DQM Cosmics run 146787 (27 Sept 2010) Cosmics run 157891 (15 Feb 2011) (re-)Confirmed: The L 1 A timing shifts from the TTCci TTCex recabling have been properly corrected at the Global Trigger 15 Feb 2011 G. Rakness (UCLA) 3

CSC Activities • Last week – CSCTF firmware updated – Upgraded to XDAQ 10 – Followed upgrade and rollback of TTC software – Final CLCT muonic timing iteration before collisions (see next page) 15 Feb 2011 G. Rakness (UCLA) 4

Average value of ALCT in CLCT match window per chamber Cosmic ray data run

Average value of ALCT in CLCT match window per chamber Cosmic ray data run 157912 taken 15 Feb 2011 This distribution has the following features: C. Farrell (UCLA) • • No CSC below 2. 5 All CSC’s within 1 bx of 3 This is the timing we want to start 2011 collisions… Plan when collisions come: 1. Confirm good AFEB – ALCT – CSCTF timing 2. Tune CLCT timing based on collisions, as needed 15 Feb 2011 G. Rakness (UCLA) 5

CSC “To Do” before collisions • Global runs: CSCTF needs to test their data

CSC “To Do” before collisions • Global runs: CSCTF needs to test their data format zerosuppression (in order to not fill up the buffer of the DDU) – Needs coordinated CMSSW versions at HLT, DQM, and offline… – Needs backup plan to reduce data payload in case it fails • During Beam development, before collisions… – On online computers, delete operating system and reinstall with quattor • Karoly is the CSC point person for this – Update to EMUlib 10. 1 • Jinghua and Karoly are point people… – Calibration runs? • Either during beam development or during technical stops during collisions… – Automatically deal with HV trips • Evaldas is the point person… 15 Feb 2011 G. Recall: Use fitted peak position of charge in 3 x 3 bin as a measure of gain • Simulation out of the box looks like this Fit of the form: A + B/cos( ) … to reflect dependence on path length… Does a good job of describing the simulation 15 Feb 2011 G. Rakness (UCLA) 8

Talked to Tim • He doesn’t quite know what to do with this… • Some questions he had… – What do FAST site results know about gains? – Are there HV dips in the simulation? • I want to just see if I can make the simulation match the data, and see if the widths become similar… • He thinks it might be a good thing to show at a CSC Operations+DPG meeting 15 Feb 2011 G.
