Critical Thinking • What does this term mean? Is it relevant to all types of study? There are two strands to this term: q the idea of thinking analytically. q the use of the work of critics or theorists to back up an argument you make in an assignment or exam or essay q Critical works are secondary material. 28
Critical essay • • First of all, critical thinking is the difference between description and analysis. A critical piece of work makes points which follow on, one from another, in a logical fashion, to build up an argument. One way of making sure you don’t fall into the ‘descriptive’ trap is to get into the habit of proving your point. The tutor doesn’t want to know what a text says - s/he’s read it, most likely - but wants instead to know how you are interpreting it. Nor does the tutor want to know your opinion. That sounds a little harsh, but if you say ‘I think this novel/ theory/ textbook is rubbish’ or ‘I don’t like it’, no-one is going to take you very seriously in academic terms. This does not mean that your view isn’t important. It is, but instead of it remaining just an opinion , make it into a reasoned argument, by engaging critically with the topic and giving evidence for your contention. So, you could say ‘This theory has its adherents, but it falls down on the following points. . ’ instead of saying theory’s useless and leaving it at that. One of the methods you might use to make your argument convincing is to take, for a time, an opposing line to the one you’re following, in order first to evaluate how much evidence there is for it and then to reject it in favour of the line you’re taking, which you believe has more to commend it. You’ll give reasons for thinking the way you do, using quotations from reputable sources to back up your argument. 29
