You also must know the difference between base words and suffixes. The blue boxes contain the base words. The yellow boxes contain the suffixes. Remember. Suffixes come at the end of a word.

Doubling Lesson 1 All four Steps have to be checked in order to double the last consonant of the base word. Base Word Suffix

Step 3: Does the base word end in one consonant? If you can remember this step, it will help you identify whether or not to double. acting NO doubling!!! fastest

Step 4: Does the suffix begin with a vowel? If you can remember this step too, it will help you identify whether or not to double. redness NO doubling!!! dimly

When a base word ends in silent-e, drop e before adding a suffix that starts with a vowel. If the base-word ends in a silent e, you drop the silent e when adding a suffix starting with a vowel. X biter NO doubling!!! X taping
