Matthew 5: 17 -20 17 “Don’t think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I haven’t come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18 For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. 19 Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands (the commands of Jesus) will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.

There are different kinds of laws

Cultural laws (food laws) 4. Moral laws

Food laws have changed Gen. 1: 30 – vegetarian Gen. 9: 3 - “everything that lives and moves will be food for you. Lev. 11 – Rules of clean and unclean meat to Moses Mark 7: 14 “In saying this, Jesus declared all foods ‘clean’. ” Romans 14: 20 – “All food is clean. ” 1 Tim. 4: 4 ‘ “Everything God created is good…” Heaven – vegetarian

Jesus came to fulfill the law, not abolish it. But by fulfilling it, he outdates many old laws. Col. 2: 17 – “These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ. ”

The purpose of the Law was to lead us to Christ Romans 3: 20: “No one will be declared righteous in his sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin. ” Gal. 3: 24, 25: “the law was put in charge to lead us to Christ that we might be justified by faith. Now that faith has come, we’re no longer under the supervision of the law. ” Romans 3: 22, 23 - “But now a righteousness from God, apart from law, has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe…. for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. ”

Jesus wants us to follow and teach His commands 5: 19 Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

Conclusion - Understand what laws have been superseded. - Never allow traditions to become more important than God’s law. - The one thing we should dedicate our lives to is knowing God’s will and doing it. - The law could never make us right with God. Only Jesus can do that.
