Leveraging NASA’s Fire Information for Resource Management System (FIRMS) for USFS Active Fire Mapping USFS - Brad Quayle, USFS Geospatial Technology and Applications Center, NASA - Robert Wolfe, Diane Davies, Otmar Olsina, Greg Ederer
USFS - FIRMS • This work stems from a long standing collaboration between NASA and the USFS • USFS is partnering with NASA LANCE / FIRMS to leverage its web based active fire mapping and data dissemination capabilities • This work is being done under an MOU between NASA (MODAPS) and USFS • The output will be a NASA-USFS version of FIRMS tailored to the US/Canada to better support the FS/interagency fire management needs • Developments made to USFS – FIRMS will benefit NASA FIRMS (Global)

USFS - FIRMS Fire Map Viewer Prototype for US and Canada USFS – FIRMS will be tailored to meet the needs of Active Fire Mapping Program end users. There will be a phased introduction starting in late 2020.
Phase 1 FIRMS US/Canada Capabilities and Functions • Fire Map Viewer • Active fire detections • Symbolized by time since detection, FRP and confidence • Additional contextual layers • Current US and Canada large incident locations • Current/historical satellite imagery (MODIS, VIIRS, GOES) • US and Canada administrative ownership • Daily fire danger forecasts • Current NWS fire weather watch/red flag warning areas • Data Downloads • NRT and science quality active fire data • NRT active fire data KMLs • Symbolized by time since detection • Custom current/historical MODIS/VIIRS image subsets (Worldview Snapshots) • Web Services • WMS and WMS-T MODIS/VIIRS active fire data (FIRMS / GIBS) • Optimized to meet USFS decision support application needs • WMS and WMS-T MODIS/VIIRS imagery services (GIBS) • Fire Alerts • Fire alert subscription service • Provide by administrative land units, etc.
