Molecular Level • Molecules are made up of atoms. • Organisms are made of small molecules such as water or H 2 O and large molecules called macromolecules.
The 4 macromolecules of life • Proteins: provide structure and act as enzymes for chemical reactions • Lipids: provide insulation and long term energy storage • Carbohydrates: Used for short-term energy • Nucleic Acids: DNA and RNA-store genetic information
Cellular Level Classic Cell Theory: 1. All living things have at least 1 cell. 2. Cells come from pre-existing cells. 3. Cells are the smallest units of life.
Cellular Level
Tissue Level • A group of cells that performs a specific function in a multicellular organism
Organ Level • Several different types of tissues that work together for a specific purpose make up an organ
Organ System Level • An organ system is made of several organs that work together to perform a function
Organism Level • An individual living thing is an organism
Population Level • A group of organisms of the same species that live in the same location is a population
Community Level • All the different species of organisms in a particular location
Ecosystem Level • The community of living organisms as well as the abiotic (non-living) factors of the environment • Biotic factors: living • Abiotic factors: non-living
Biome Level • Biomes are large ecosystems that have the same climate and community of organisms
Biosphere • The part of the Earth that contains all ecosystems
