Annual Program Review The University of the Badlands Program Reviewers: Drs. Hanjani and Barbaro Current citations: Case log minimums Faculty scholarly activity Oral board Flags: Resident scholarly activity Oral board
Current Citation 1. Case Log minimum DC 25 2. Case Log minimum DC 26 3. Case Log minimum DC 27 Citation Response Residents had not been logging these cases. We are now monitoring case logs monthly
Current Citation 4. Faculty scholarly activity Citation Response We investigated this issue and discovered that not all faculty scholarly activity had been accurately reported. In addition, a new research institute opened last year and several faculty have been engaged in research projects that are expected to lead to publication.
Current Citation 5. Oral Board Citation Response We have instituted a mock oral exam process for current residents and also invited recent graduates back to participate. We have conducted a faculty development workshop to educate all faculty on how to utilize oral exam -type questions when discussing a case with the resident following each surgery.

Resident Survey
Current Citation 1. Resident Survey: Faculty Citation Response We have worked to improve faculty participation in conferences. Both faculty and resident scholarly activity has improved.
Current Citation 2. Resident Survey: Evaluation Citation Response We have held a meeting with residents to explain the process for keeping all evaluations confidential. We also had a workshop on feedback. Resident often do not always realize when they are getting feedback.
Current Citation 3. Resident Survey: Resources Citation Response We held a workshop for residents on wellbeing and focused particularly on fatigue management. As part of that workshop we reviewed the institutional process in place for reporting concerns. The first point of contact is the senior resident, who will gather all concerns and report them to the program director.
Current Citation 4. Case log min. DC 3 5. Case log min. DC 6 Citation Response We audited the case logs and found that residents were not accurately logging their cases. The current residents are on track to meet all minimums.

Complement Increase Request University of Northern Climate and Snow Program Reviewers: Drs. Harbaugh and Muraszko
Educational Rationale The complement increase would allow for enhanced, well–rounded training experiences in the full breadth of neurosurgical care and in preparing our trainees to be future leaders in the field. With the increased complement we would transition our resident schedule to integrate our satellite sites as elective rotations for our residents. Our transition also includes designated electives in radiosurgery, endovascular surgery, additional clinic time and rotations on the spine, tumor, vascular and XYZBC services. We have enclosed a proposed rotation block schedule when a full complement of 28 residents is reached after 7 years. Our PGY-4 residents would continue to spend 3 months as the chief resident at XYZMC. Our PGY-3 residents would have the opportunity to rotate at Community Hospital for two months in order to experience a smaller community hospital before becoming the PGY-4 chiefs. Both the PGY-3‟s and the PGY-2‟s would have designated months on Endovascular neurosurgery as well as two months of assigned outpatient clinic rotations. Additionally, the increased complement will allow our PGY-1 residents to rotate on the neurosurgery service for two months during their intern year. This opportunity will allow our interns to quickly become part of the team and learn how the neurosurgery service works. Currently, our PGY-2‟s begin their year shadowing a PGY-3 on “buddy-call‟ until they are able to take call on their own. Having the option for PGY-1‟s to spend time in the neurosurgical operating rooms will shorten the length of time they spend on buddy-call. The determination of their ability to take call on their own will be determined by our faculty during the CCC meeting and the end-of-year faculty, residency review meeting.
Complement Increase Request University of Central California Program Reviewers: Drs. Khan and Hanjani
Educational Rationale The program has recently added three new faculty and a new hospital is under construction. The resident complement increase will allow the program to take advantage of these new learning opportunities.
Participating Site Request Southern University Program Reviewers: Drs. Muraszko and Harbaugh
Educational Rationale In order to expand resident experience in pediatric neurosurgery, the program added two ABNS certified pediatric neurosurgeons to the core faculty, Dr. A Smith and Dr. B Jones. These faculty are based primarily at XYZ Hospital, which is part of the ABC Health Care System but under separate governance. They have established a clinical practice that includes a busy operative schedule with a broad spectrum of pediatric cases as well as two half-day outpatient clinics per week. The current block diagram shows a 3 -month PGY 3 pediatric neurosurgery rotation at the primary site. We plan to replace this with a 6 -month PGY 4 rotation at the new site, which is less than 15 miles from the primary site. Residents currently may choose from several elective opportunities during PGY 6. A new pediatric elective will be added to those currently available. There are no residents from other programs that use this site. Dr. Jones will serve as site director.
