Level 1 & 2 Writing- Exam revision Learning Aims: To recall different types of writing To identify features of various types of text
Starter
L E T T E R Your letter should be set out like above. Although you need to have 3 paragraphs. 1)Why you are writing 2) The info paragraph. Give details about your topic. Make sure you answer everything you have been asked. You can also make up information to increase your word count. 3)Say what you want to happen in the future. E. g. You would like a refund on your service (if a letter of complaint). • Yours sincerely if you have the person’s name. • Yours faithfully if you do not e. g. Sir/Madam. You will have to write a lot more than this in your exam! 3 paragraphs of 3 or more lines. Level 2’s will have to write more than that!
EMAIL The email (like the letter)should be written in 3 paragraphs. Always fill in the subject box with a relevant phrase. Use the email address used in the question. If one is not used (and there is an email address box to fill in), then make one up! • Sign off the email with ‘regards’ or ‘kind regards’. Do not put yours sincerely/fathfully! • Level 1’s should be writing around the length of the email above (or a little less). Level 2’s should be writing a little more.
You may be asked to write on a forum • The language should be informal. • Read the examples they have given you on the exam question. • Use the same language & tone used in the question. Also the word count should be around the same.
At L 2 you may be asked to write an article • • • Use appropriate language for a school magazine. Introduce the topic e. g. say what/why you are writing Use titles/headings Introduce and conclude the article. Layout of an example article on next page.
David Beckham – Why I admire him I am writing my article on David Beckham. I am doing this because… Why I like him His strengths His weaknesses What others think of him Conclusion Article layout
A realistic article should consist of: 1. an eye-catching title which attracts the readers’ attention and suggests theme of the article. (Think about why you read a magazine or newspaper article recently - what made you read it? ) Articles can also have subheadings before each paragraph. 2. an introduction which clearly defines the topic to be covered and keeps the reader’s attention. 3. the main body of two to five paragraphs in which the topic is further developed in detail. Evidence or reasons for every argument you make. 4. the conclusion - summarising the topic or a final opinion, recommendation or comment. 5. When you plan your news story, remember that newspaper reports usually provide the answers to the questions WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN , WHY, HOW?
In every piece of writing you must start with why you are writing! (Purpose)
You can think about using one or more of the following approaches in writing persuasively. 1. Persuasive words or phrases make your audience they should either agree with your point of view Obviously, without a doubt, undeniably, surely, definitely, certainly etc 2. Personal Pronouns When you use personal pronouns such as: We, us, you. You are trying to involve the reader directly. 3. Informal Language Using language in this way gives a conversational tone to the writing and can make the reader regard you as a friend. 4. Repetition If you say something just once, it can be easily forgotten so, if you have a certain message to get across, try to ensure that you say it more than once. 5. Presentational Devices Headings; Sub-headings; Paragraphs; Bullet Points Bold Type; Exclamation Marks; Photographs
Rules for writing exam! • • • No text speak. No little I’s e. g. ‘i am going’. Check your homophones are correct e. g. there, their & they’re. Use a dictionary(please!!) Make sure you use paragraphs. You will struggle to pass if you don’t. • Make sure you use capital letters in the right place. Every town, road name, county, post code on a letter. • Spend 5 minutes when you have finished to proof read your work. You will find at least 1 mistake!
