Lev Vygotsky cognitive development theory Ø Vygotsky was called “ The Mozart of Psychology”. Ø One another major theory in cognitive development proposed by Lev Vygotsky which is termed as socio-cultural approach to cognitive development. Ø He basically focused on school children and their cognitive development which is generally influenced by social factors and language.
Continue…. Ø The main difference between Piaget and Vygotsky that Piaget mainly focused on (internal influences) whereas Vygotsky focused on (external influences ) for cognitive development. Ø Internal influences= schemas external influences= social and cultural
Some basic principles 1. According to Vygotsky children and all humans experience continuous development. It means it not go through stages like Piaget’s theory. 2. It begins at birth and end with death. 3. He also mentioned that learning is possible without development. 4. Language plays a central role in mental development. Language is a tool for developing higher psychological functions.
Continue…. 5) Development cannot be separated from its social context. Social context means concepts, language, symbols which children use during cognition development. 6) Learning appears twice. First on the social level and later on the individual level. social level = between people (interpsychology) individual level= inside the children (intrapsychology). To be continue. .
