WHAT IS LETTER WRITING? Ø A written or printed communication directed to a person or organization. q WHAT IS COMMUNICATION? Ø The word ‘communicate’ comes from Latin verb ‘communicare’ that means ‘to impart’ or ‘ to share’. Ø Whatever is shared in common are ideas. So, sharing of ideas/code is known as communication.

PARTS OF A LETTER �The form and style of different types of letter vary, but the following points are common to all letters: Ø The Heading or the writer’s address and date Ø The Salutation Ø The Body of the letter Ø The Subscription Ø The Signature
q THE HEADING: It consists of the writer’s address and the date of writing. It is written on the top, right hand corner of the page. q THE SALUTATION: This is a formal greeting. There are various forms of salutation. The form of salutation depends upon the degree of intimacy or relationship between the writer and the addressee. The salutation is written at the left hand of the first page at a lower level than the heading. The first and the last words of the salutation should begin with a capital letter q THE BODY OF THE LETTER: This is the most important part of a letter. It contains the main message that the writer of a letter wants to communicate. It should be concise and effective. § For informal letters to friends and relatives: A free comma, informal style. § For business and official letters: formal, matter of fact style, short and simple sentences. These letters should be to the point without any unnecessary details.
q. THE SUBSCRIPTION: This is a leave taking phrase. q. THE SIGNATURE: This is the end of a letter. It is written at the end of the body of a letter on the left/right hand side. Here the writer puts his/her signature.

INFORMAL LETTERS �Informal letters are different from formal letters. �They are written to father, mother, brother, sister, relatives and friends. Ø NOTE: -For writing a formal or informal letters, the students should always use : �Suitable format �Well-organized content �Appropriate language
CHARACTERISTICS OF GOOD LETTERS o Should be brief, clear and to the point o Writer should use separate paragraphs for separate topics o The first paragraph should indicate theme of the letter o Clumsy expressions and ambiguity should be avoided
