He often sat and looked down at his kingdom from a tall tower in his castle. There were lots of castles in Spain. For many years, armies from neighboring kingdoms had attacked the king’s city. They would throw spears and shoot flaming arrows over the top of the stone wall that protected the city. But the stone wall that protected the city was so high and so thick that the armies could not get inside to hurt the people of Madrid.

In a few months, the grain would ripen and golden-brown. Then the farmers would cut down the grain to be made into bread to feed all the people living in Madrid. The king also saw acres upon acres of grapevines and cork trees. Cattle roamed the hills in search of grass, and children herded them along to make sure none were lost.

When night began to fall, all the children, farmers, and cattle would come back through the city gate and return to their homes inside the city wall. The King of Madrid smiled to himself. His city was one of the best in Spain, because of the strong stone wall that protected his people.
