Let’s talk about reading for IELTS! Reading Exam IELTS – Lesson 3 – Part 3
Types of Reading Tasks Type 1: Matching Headings Type 2: True / False / Not given Type 3: Multiple choice. Type 4: Short answers.
True / False / Not Given: Why so hard? ü Spend too much time making sure that it is ‘not given’; ü Not understanding what ‘not given’ means; ü A failure to understand exactly what each statement means, and therefore being unable to identify true or false. ü Focusing on keywords instead of understanding what the statement as a whole means.
True / False / Not Given: Why so hard? ü If the text agrees with or confirm the information in the statement, the answer is true. ü If the text contradicts or is the opposite of the information in the statement, the answer is false. ü If there is no information or it is impossible to know, the answer is not given.
True / False / Not Given: Strategies ü Always read the instructions carefully; ü Read all the statements carefully, trying to understand what the whole sentence means rather than simply highlighting key words; ü Try to think of the synonyms that might be in the text. This will help you to identify the matching part of the text; ü Match the statement with the correct part of the text;
True / False / Not Given: Strategies ü Focus on the statement again, and then carefully read the matching part of the text to establish if it’s true or false. Remember, the meaning should match that of the statement exactly if it is true. ü Underline the words that given you the answer, as this will help you focus and you can check back later. ü If you can’t find the answer, mark it as not given and move on to the next question.
