Lets start thinking about the actual Power Point
Let’s start thinking about the actual Power. Point slides, so your presentation will be interesting and not annoying to your audience. • The next example slide is fine for your introduction.
The History of the French Horn Jane Wolfarth, MS University of Utah
But the rest of my slides stink. • What’s the problem with the next one?
The history of the French horn is very interesting. • • • The French horn was not actually French. It’s from Germany. It started out as a natural horn, like one made from a cow horn. It’s all folded up, but it’s actually 12 -13 feet long. For some dumb reason, the horn is pitched in a different key from the rest of the instruments. It’s viewed as one of the most difficult instruments to learn how to play. Usually an orchestra has 8 horn players. There are 4 horn parts in orchestral music, with 2 players on each part. The first chair plays the most difficult parts. The reason the horn is so hard to play is because the notes are so close together, so you need to know exactly what the note will sound like before you play it. For example, you can play B flat, C, D, and E without pushing down any keys.
It has too much text! • The next slide is much better.
French horn basics • • • Actually from Germany Used since the 16 th century More than 6 meters total length 3 valves, 3 octave range 8 players, 4 parts
What’s the problem with that last slide? • All the words come up at the same time, so the audience reads everything instantly and then get bored because they already know what you want to say. • The next slide is better.

So how do you make the sentences come up one at a time?
So what’s another problem?
Use at LEAST a 24 pt font
Do you like the next slide?
This is a double French horn.
So get the highest resolution you can, at least 200 x 200.
How do you like the next slide?
This is a double French horn.
So get clean photos, if you use them.
How do you like the next slide?
Beethoven was the first composer to write great French horn parts.

I don’t feel very good. . .
This is NOT your golden opportunity to show clever you are with a Power. Point! • Just keep it simple.
What’s the problem with the next slide?
The history of the French horn is open to controversy. • Some people say we should include hunting horns when we talk about the history of the French horn. • Other people think we should just start with the first orchestral pieces that included the French horn.
The audience doesn’t need you if you just read from the slide! • They can read all by themselves without your help. • Don’t put full sentences like these. I want to hear you speak and not read. • The next slides are fine.
The first “horns” • Hunting horns
The first “horns” • Orchestral horns
Now what’s the problem with my next slides?
Disney Characters
Disney theme parks
Ouch! • Too much stuff to look at! • Give your audience time to think by having less information on each slide.
Finally. . . • I recommend you always use a gentle transition between slides:
The next slides are beautiful, but I don’t like how they just go bang.
See how the gentle transition is much nicer?
