A paragraph should have following features: • The first sentence should introduce theme. • All the sentences should give details on the main theme in an interesting way. • The last line sentence should present the ideas of the paragraph in a nutshell.

Paragraph Writing Q. Read the given paragraphs carefully – Example-I 1. Mahatma Gandhi was a great freedom fighter. He freed India from the British rule in 1947. He was born on 2 nd October, 1869 at Porbandar in Gujarat. He was known as the ‘Father of the Nation. His full name was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. His mother, Putlibai, was a very religious lady and used to tell him stories from the scriptures and mythology. Little Gandhi grew up to be an honest and a decent student. At 19 years of age, he went to England to study Law. He came back from England became a Lawyer at Bombay court. In 1893, he went to South Africa and there Indians were not treated properly. He fought against injustice. Gandhiji could not tolerate the oppression on the Indians by the Britishers. So, he stayed there and fought through peaceful, non-violent methods. In 1914, Gandhiji returned to India. He travelled throughout the country. He fought against the Britishers through peaceful methods. His policies forced the Britishers to leave the country. On 30 th January 1948, he was shot dead by a communalist.

Example-II 2. Diwali There are many festivals in India. One of the most famous and celebrated festival is Diwali, also known as Deepawali. It is an important festival of Hindus. It is celebrated with immense enthusiasm across the country. It is a festival of lights and people celebrate it with great joy. During this festival, people light up their houses with candles and diyas. People worship the lord Ganesha for welfare and prosperity and goddess Lakshmi for wealth and wisdom. People clean and decorate their houses before the festival. This festival is celebrated in the Hindu month which often falls during October or November every year. It is celebrated to mark the return of Lord Rama after 14 years of exile and his victory over the demon Ravana. In many parts of India, Diwali is celebrated for five consecutive days. Hindus regard it as a celebration of life and use the occasion to strengthen relationships. In some parts of India, it also marks the beginning of a new year.
