Let Your Voice Be Heard Presentation to WIC
Let Your Voice Be Heard Presentation to: WIC Breastfeeding Coordinators Presented by: Angela Jackson, IBCLC (RLC) Title: Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Specialist Date: October 5, 2017
Objectives • Discover your role in breastfeeding data collection • Identify training opportunities for Peer Counselors (PC’s) • Evaluate the Peer Counselor Database(PCDB) against the Breastfeeding Report Card(BRC)
How is breastfeeding data collected within the Peer Counselor Database? • Mothers are asked what their concerns are during the enrollment period • PC input that information Today we will discover our role with data collection within the Peer Counselor Database (PCDB).
As shown below, How effective is the data?
How effective is the data? (cont. ) When checking the numbers. . . • We had 1, 970 moms on the program, of that only 1, 344 had responses recorded. • This leaves 626 mothers who were not accounted for. • Lets see how this affects our data

Lets build our “Toolbox” • What is a “Toolbox”? (what comes to mind when you hear the phrase “toolbox”) • What’s in your “Toolbox” now?
“Toolbox” Add-ins • Review with Peer Counselors the importance of identifying barriers the client perceives. • Peer Counselors should use “Talking Points” as a guide to conversations with WIC participants.

“Toolbox” Add-ins (cont. ) Team Work
How ‘handy’ have you been? • How have you used your “Toolbox”? • Some districts have been more consistent than others with breastfeeding data collection • Example: One district has 2000 breastfeeding mothers in their district and have 1, 891 mothers accounted for. • Example: Another district has 2000 breastfeeding mothers in their district and have 1, 412 mothers accounted for. • The first mentioned district has done a pretty good job of collecting data while the second mentioned district needs to reassess ways to improve their data collection.
Spot Light How does De. Kalb compare with data input?
Assessing our needs How are we assessing needs and training opportunities for: • Moms • Peers • Staff • Community

Opportunities for improvement What are some training opportunities that you envision for your district?
Training Opportunities Interpret the data • Poor milk supply • Unsuccessful previous breastfeeding experience Evaluate Train • Are these concerns • Training for Peer ‘valid’? Counselors covering • What education has major topics of been presented? concern. • Can these concerns be • Implementing teach covered in the peer back scope?
Can you hear me now? • The Peer Counselor Database is your chance to let your work speak for you. • Remember that with anything we do, if we don’t record it, then it did not happen. • Self reflection: Is your voice being heard? • How can you ensure that your voice is heard?
Lets Get Moving • Wait! We can’t look at the future without adequate data collection. • The Peer Counselor Database is data driven, without a clear outline of where we are currently, we can’t map out the next stop.
Let’s do some comparisons • Peer Counselor Database vs. Breastfeeding Report Card • What is the Breastfeeding Report Card and why is it important – This report is handed down from the CDC, it gives us a picture of where we fall in relation to the healthy people 2020 goals. – https: //www. cdc. gov/breastfeeding/pdf/2016 breastfeeding reportcard. pdf • Things to keep in mind – The Peer Counselor Database does not capture all moms and babies that WIC serves
Compare the Data
Report Card
Future goals • Duration rate increase for exclusive breastfeeding • Increase in accurate data collections • Meeting current healthy people 2020 goals
Summary • Accurate data collection is essential to the Peer Counselor program • The Peer Counselor Database (PCDB) is data driven • We rely on data to determine what support to provide Peer Counselors (PCs), moms and babies • Data collection is a team responsibility • Your voice comes from the data, let your voice and hard work be heard
