Let us meditate for a minute on James

“Let us meditate for a minute on James Bond. Clever and tough as he is, he’d be mincemeat a hundred times over if not for the hyper-competent support team that stands behind him. When he needs to chase a villain, the team summons an Aston Martin DB 5. When he’s poisoned by a beautiful woman with dubious connections, the team offers the antidote in a spring-loaded, space-age infusion device…” Erin Kissane, “A Checklist for Content Work”

STRATEGIES FOR MISSION ACCOMPLISHMENT
Good Content is Appropriate Q / James Bond Webmaster / Audience Even before Q starts tinkering with the Aston Martin or Bond’s vodka martini mix (shaken, not stirred), Q must anticipate what tools an agent will need and the best way to deliver them. Good content strategists are in tune with their audiences’ needs and wants. Though you can never anticipate everything for every user every time, doing research and taking time to plan will ultimately make writing web content easier.
Good Content is Appropriate: Strategy Consideration Question Writer What is your role? Message What information are you communicating? Audience Who are you writing to? Tone How should your message come across? Style What is the clearest, most concise way to communicate your message? Purpose Why are you communicating your message? Why is it important? Answer
Good Content is User-Centered Q / James Bond Webmaster / Audience Q would never dream of sending James Bond out into the field with devices that hadn’t been tested (many times) by other agents or Q himself. Making sure your content is effective means testing its efficacy on the users who will be using it.
Good Content is User-Centered: Strategy Conduct an Informal Usability Test Ask a participant to complete a task on your website while you observe. Seeing a member of your audience navigate your content in person can help you troubleshoot problems you didn’t even realize you had.
WRITING WEB CONTENT: CREATING AND REVISING
Good Content is Consistent Q / James Bond Webmaster / Audience Once a device works for Bond, it must always work in the same way. Having one lever in the car signify torpedoes and the same lever in an identical car be a jettison device would have disastrous results. Keeping content consistent gives your audience the ability to understand your message independently and effectively.
Good Content is Consistent: Strategy Create an in-house style sheet. When building a style sheet, consider – Commonly used terms – Organizational structures – Defined headings
Good Content is Clear and Concise Q / James Bond Webmaster / Audience Q never makes Bond read through an instruction manual before he can use the devices; they are intuitive. Clear and concise writing improves readability and increases the chances that your audience will understand the message.
Good Content is Clear and Concise: Strategy Organizational Structure Sentence Structure Known/New Short vs. Long Sentences Paramedic Method
WRITING WEB CONTENT: MAINTAINING
Good Content is Supported Q / James Bond Webmaster / Audience Bond has the luxury of walking away from a case once it’s closed. Unfortunately, Q and his team don’t have the same luxury. He must continuously work in the background, repairing damaged devices, updating and maintaining tools, and always being ready to create new ones when the demand arises. Finished content requires the work and dedication of a team to ensure that content is ready to publish initially and reviewed periodically to update the content for accuracy.
Good Content is Supported: Strategy Create an Editing Chain
