Compelling Statistical Trends of the USA Science & Engineering NSF Science & Engineering Indicators 2008 • From 1950 to 2000, employment in S&E occupations grew 6. 7% vs 1. 6% for total employment, 4 X the rate trend will continue. • Between 1985 to 2005 Annual graduating S&E • PHDs increased from 3 K to 6. 5 K, 30% of them are US citizens • MS increased from 64 K to 93 K, 48% are US citizens • In 2005 foreign born represents 32% of all S&E occupations with a MS degree, and 41% of all S&E occupations holding a Ph. D degree. • Less than 1% of current elementary school students will seek advanced education in the science • 60% math teachers teaching 5 th – 8 th grades are not math major or trained math teachers • By 2040, diversity will account for 49% of population, currently only 11% S&E graduates are non-white, Diversity STEM is crucial • Post 911, increasingly foreign students are not staying to seek employment in the US 13
