Bridging Text and Context Beginning in the 1920’s, Harlem’s artists wrote poetry, painted, played music (swing and blues) and danced. Some famous artists were Langston Hughes, Count Basie, Louis Armstrong and more.

Theme- Example 1 The Power of Love and Trust
Theme- Example While she prepares the meal, Mrs. Jones leaves her purse on the other side of the screen where she cooks. Roger worries that she may not trust him, so he moves where he hopes she can see him. “And he did not want to be mistrusted now. ”
Theme- Example As Mrs. Jones talks with Roger, she does not ask him anything about himself which could be embarrassing.
Theme- Example 2 Forgiveness and Empathy When Mrs. Jones sees that Roger is neglected and hungry, she forgives him. She sees Roger is hungry, and cooks him a meal. She shows him empathy by telling him she has also done wrong in the past.
Theme- Example 3 Christian Charity Despite Roger’s attempted robbery, Mrs. Jones understands his poverty and want. She gives him ten dollars for the purchase of the shoes that he wanted and she tells him not to steal again.
