Lesson: The Reconstruction Amendments and The Evolution of African Americans September 3 rd 2019
Daily Learning Objectives: 1. As a group, student will be able to identify and explain the pertinence of the 13 th-15 th amendments (Reconstruction Amendments) in regard to how they impacted African Americans status as citizens within the United States after the Civil War 2. Individually, students will be able to complete a KWL Chart on the Reconstruction era for African Americans after the Civil war including key events, terms, and people pertaining to the 13 th-15 th amendments 3. Students will be able to acknowledge their own cultural and social identities and how these things can often marginalize people and groups; however, they will be able to draw the conclusion that through social advocacy, social, political, and economic change can be generated
SOL Objectives Covered: ● Reconstruction: 1865 to 1877 ○ USII. 3 The student will apply social science skills to understand the effects of Reconstruction on American life by ■ A) analyzing the impact of the 13 th, 14 th, and 15 th Amendments to the Constitution of the United States and how they changed the meaning of citizenship

Cross The Line Activity: ● Students gather behind the line and as I read the questions aloud take a step forward as these questions relate to you 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 1. When watching movies or TV do you often feel that many of the characters do not represent your same racial or cultural background? Has someone ever discriminated against you because of your racial or cultural background? Have you ever felt left out of a group or setting because of the way you look? Have you ever felt uncomfortable about your appearance? Have you ever been followed in a store or social setting? Do you think society makes expectations about you or judgments about you because of your appearance?
Cross The Line Activity: How did this activity make you feel about yourself and how you are potentially perceived by others in the United States ?
Transition: Students please return to your seats to receive instructions on the next activity
KWL CHART Activity: KNOW, WANT TO KNOW, AND LEARNED ● With the key dates, events, terms and people provided please fill in the KWL chart individually into the subsequent categories of the terms that you already know, the terms that you do not know yet, and for homework after class you will add the terms from your want to know category that you learned in class and place them into your learned category ○ ○ You have 10 minutes to complete the chart Then we will go over the chart for 10 minutes as a class
Transition: Students please settle down. Next please find another class member to pair with for the following activity and directions will be explained thereafter.
Summarize to Synthesize Activity: The Civil Rights Amendments and African Americans ● After getting into your pairs, individually read the text and summarize the important information based on the questions listed within the powerpoint ○ ○ In your own words summarize the 13 th-15 th Amendments How did these Amendments shape the lives of Black people in the United States? ○ You have 25 minutes to complete the task ■ 7 minutes to answer the questions ■ 3 minutes to discuss answers with your partner ■ 15 minutes to come to a consensus and answer the questions with your partner ● Finally with your partner you will share your summarizations amongst one another and come to a consensus (an overall agreement) on what you believe the most cohesive (best and concise) answer is to the questions
Transition: Students please return to your seats. Next you will be conducting a 3 step interview based on the videos in the links provided below on the Reconstruction Amendments. Count off into groups of four. Two students will represent group 1 and two students will represent group 2. Remember to think about how: cultural background could and still does impact social standing in the United States. 1) Thereafter a member from group one will interview a member from group two. They will interview each other based on their opposing questions to retrieve information. 2) After this the group of four students will reconvene and the students will share what they learned from the activity from their respective opposing group member.
Activity: Segrigation to its Elimination 3 Step Interview ● ● Group 1 & 2 Students watch the video below starting at the 3 minute and 47 second mark and answer the overarching question along with your individual questions: ○ Youtube Video Link: https: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=k. KW 4 ■ Overarching Question: ● How effective were the Reconstruction Amendments in the South? ○ Group 1 Question: ■ How specifically did Southern states fight to hinder the Reconstruction Amendments from being enforced? ○ Group 2 Question: ■ What landmark cases in the video led to these Amendments being enforced? You have 20 minutes to complete this task ○ 5 minutes to view your respective videos ○ 5 minutes to answer the questions ○ 10 minutes to share the information
Conclusion Overarching Ideas and Final Activity: Exit Ticket ● ● The constitution was initially written without African Americans in mind. However, due to its amendments African Americans achieved new freedoms. But, in the face of systematic oppression African Americans were still deprived of their rights. Even though these unwritten laws in the South were intact African Americans still fought for their freedoms through social and political movements which led to the Civil Rights Movement and legislative change. Overall, one’s differences can account for adverse treatment; however, with social and political up rise these unjust wrongs can be rectified Students please complete the exit ticket passed out to you on the Reconstruction Amendments and today’s current political climate (setting) ○ You have 6 minutes to complete the exit ticket
