Success criteria I can explain the difference between a long-term and shortterm illness, and provide examples. I can classify illnesses which are long-term and short-term. Create a Power. Point to educate younger year groups about the impact of different medical conditions.

Task 1: Think, Pair and Share Think… You have 60 seconds to write how you know when someone is ill – think about symptoms and how people might act when they are ill. Pair… Share your ideas with your partner, write down any examples that you did not have. Share… Share your ideas with the rest of the class.

Task 2: Classification As a class, come up with a list of symptoms. Classify these symptoms into the following groups: Symptoms you can see Symptoms you cannot see For example, vomiting For example, headache

Task 3: Being ill In pairs, discuss a time when you have needed extra care. This might have been when you were younger, when you were ill, if you had broken an arm or a leg… In your pairs, make a list of the type of care you needed, for example, help up the stairs, warm drinks… Was it long-term or short-term care?

Lesson Starter Last period we discussed how we can see some symptoms of illness, but we cannot always see all of them. Come up with a list of illnesses which you think are “hidden symptoms”, for example, you can’t see if someone has a headache.

Success criteria I can give examples of some long term illnesses or disabilities I can research specific information about the effects of one illness or disability I can work with a partner to create a Power. Point describing how certain illnesses effect people

Task 1: Long-term illness and disability All these conditions have what we might describe as “hidden symptoms” – to look at someone you might not know that they had a condition. Alzheimer’s Multiple Sclerosis Epilepsy Diabetes Dementia Arthritis Stroke Does anyone know anything about any of these conditions?

Task 2: Long-term conditions Over the next couple of periods, you are going to create a Power. Point presentation about one of the illness on the previous slide. Presentation success criteria: • Information about your chosen condition • Effects of the condition on a person, for example, symptoms of the condition • Possible treatments for chosen condition • Information in your own words (do not copy and paste) • Images and pictures

Task 3: Presentation Each group is now going to present their presentations on each of the medical conditions that we looked at.
