The new-born is unable to take care of him/herself and relies upon the parents to take care of him/her. � Toddler stage – this is a busy time for the parent. The toddler is constantly busy. He/she is exploring the world. � Childhood stage – this is when the child goes to school and learns to adjust to external rules and regulations. 4

This is a time for physical growth and maturing of mind and behaviour. � Young adult- this is when your child needs to be empowered to take charge. Make it clear that he/she will always have a home and family when things get tough. 5

If you suspect child abuse you need to report it to the police or welfare. Most abuse happens when caregivers are unable to cope with the stress in their daily lives. The abuse of drugs and alcohol also play a role in child abuse. Adults who were abused as children themselves are more likely to abuse children. 8
