WARM UP MONDAY, OCTOBER 24, 2016 1. What are points A and H called? 2. What are points C and J called?
WAVES VOCABULARY CHAPTER 17 • Waves: A disturbance that carries energy from one place to another; travels through matter and space. • Transverse Wave: a mechanical wave; particles travel perpendicular or at a right angle to the direction that the wave moves. • Compressed Wave: particles travel in the same direction that the waves moves; in a back and forth motion. • Wavelength: the distance between two waves; has the same speed and direction
WAVES VOCABULARY CHAPTER 17 • Frequency: the number of wavelengths that pass a point in one second. • Law of reflection: The angle that the incoming wave makes with the normal = the angle that the outgoing wave makes with the normal. • Refraction: the change of direction a wave makes when its speed changes as it travels through materials. • Diffraction: The bending of a wave around another object.
WAVES VOCABULARY CHAPTER 17 • Intensity: the amount of energy a wave can carry • Pitch: the frequency of the vibration a sound makes, human perception of the frequency of sound. Low frequency= low pitch • Vibration: a rapid back-and-forth movement • Reverberation: A repetition of echoes that bounce off a surface. • Draw a wave graph on the back of your foldable.
