LESSON PLAN: LESSON OBJECTIVES: ORIENTEERING: WEEK 2 To introduce the symbols on a map. Teamwork and decision making. WARM UP (10 MINS) Symbol relay (adjusted to suit Covid precautions) Set up – place a number of map symbol answer sheets (map key sheet section 3 on Tri-O resources, depending on the amount of groups required, at one end of the room/playground and the description sheets at the other end (per group) – these are the sheets with the words on them. • In turn children run up to the map key and look at the symbol and description. They then run back and complete the description of the symbol on the sheet (this can be a nominated child for contamination purposes). Children take turns running out and completing until all of the symbols have a description. • When complete teams can collect their map key and mark their own sheets. TASK ONE (30 -40 MINS) Star event Mapped schools Set up – on the school map set out controls using the numbered sheets (as controls) from the 12 point Orienteering resources). There is ne need to number the controls just the position of where they are. • In groups give children the answer sheets and a specific letter that they must follow. • Groups stay in a designated area – these can be separate areas per group for social distances purposes – and one person runs out to a control on their map to find the first number for their corresponding group letter. For example group A have to find the number 11 first. Once they have found their starting number the person then reads the control to find out what their next number should be (checking on the Master Check Card group A have to find number 3 next). They write that number down and run back to their designated area where they hand over to the next person who finds the number that the previous person has written down. Once all numbers have been found in order the final control will have the letter F to indicate they have finished. Their sheet can be checked on the Master Check Card another letter can be given to that group so as they can continue. Some groups will struggle with what they need to do and help can be given until it becomes clear. There are 8 different numbers on the sheets so this will ensure those groups who are quicker will get lots of opportunities.
