LESSON PLAN LESSON OBJECTIVES ORIENTEERING WEEK 1 To
LESSON PLAN: LESSON OBJECTIVES: ORIENTEERING: WEEK 1 To introduce map orientation and simple route following. WARM UP (10 MINS) North, South, East & West Set up – place four sheets of paper out in an area to denote the four cardinal points of the compass (adjust distances according to space and the amount of activity required (plus social distancing requirements as children move more and breath more heavily)). • Children stand in the middle of the area and the teacher shouts out instructions to which compass point the children run to. For social distancing purposes children can stand on a cone/spot (2 m apart) and move two steps in the direction instructed. • After several attempts some of the points can be removed (or all) so as the children start to understand where each point is in relation to the other. • Further progression can bring in the ordinal points (eg North West, South East etc) TASK ONE (15 MINS) Counting Cones Set up – area shown on section 6 of the Tri-O resources. This area can be adjusted to suit social distancing and available space. • In small groups children walk through the demonstration maps to understand how to orientate a map. Talk about moving around the map and ensuring the map mirrors what can be seen with the layout of the cones (simplify by having a North label on the course and talking about how North is always at the top of a map). Discuss the points (controls) to visit as shown on the maps and also the route being taken. • After several attempts children can then move onto maps 1 -6. When handing out maps ensure the order is different for each group – e. g one start at no. 1 (through to 6) and the next group at no. 2. This ensures that groups are not following each other. Talk about the start of a course being a triangle and the finish a double circle – groups can then locate where their starting point is on the first map. Get the groups to stand at their first point and then the teacher can check they are correct (this helps with orientation). Once everyone is in the correct place each group can work through their maps – check for groups that might need some support. If one child is dominating in a group give different roles and change with every map. • When everyone has completed the maps ask the children if they noticed anything about the cones? When setting up make sure the numbers on the cones are small enough to be difficult to see without looking (but not picking up the cones). • Explain the numbers are a way of checking they have been following the correct route and that if they get all of the “sums” correct for each map they will have done so. Give each group some paper and a counting cones scoresheet and set them off again.
