Muscles of the Head and Face • • • Frontalis - head Temporalis - head Orbicularis Oculi – eye Corrugator - eyebrow Orbicularis Oris - mouth Risorius - mouth Zygomaticus – cheek Buccinator – cheek Levator Labitis (Labii) - Side of nose
Muscles of the Face and Neck • • • Masseter - jaw Mentalis – jaw Depressor Labii - lip Sternocleidomastoid - neck Platysma – neck
Frontalis Muscle • Origin – galea aponeurotica • Insertion – skin of the eyebrow and nose • Action – Raises eyebrows, wrinkles forehead, shows a state of surprise
Frontalis Muscle
Temporalis Muscle • Origin – Parietal bone • Insertion – coronoid process of the mandible • Action – raises mandible, elevates and retracts the lower jaw

Orbicularis Oculi Muscle
Corrugator Muscle • Origin – Bony ridge located above eye • Insertion – deep surface of the skin, above the middle of the orbital arch • Action – Draws eyebrow downwards and medially, producing wrinkles of the forehead and frowning
Corrugator Muscle
Orbicularis Oris Muscle • Origin – Fibres derived from other facial muscles e. g. buccinator muscle • Insertion – Into the lips • Action – Closes the mouth and puckers the lips, ready for kissing
Orbicularis Oris Muscle
Risorius Muscle • Origin – Fascia over parotid gland • Insertion – Skin at the angle of the mouth • Action – Retracts the angle of the mouth to produce a smile
Risorius Muscle
Zygomaticus Muscle • Origin – Anterior of the zygomatic arch (cheekbone) • Insertion – Corner of mouth • Action – Smiling and laughing
Zygomaticus Muscle
Buccinator Muscle • Origin – Maxilla and mandible • Insertion – Angle of the mouth • Action – Pulls back angle of mouth and flattens cheek area, aiding chewing; also involved in sucking and blowing
Buccinator Muscle
